INCOTERMS --- AN OVERVIEW

INCOTERMS are the ICC (international chamber of Commerce) official rules for the interpretations of trade terms between buyer and seller and the responsibilities of each.
In recent times many terms of trade used between shipper and consignee have changed or been altered to take into account multi-model transport options. Many terms used have been freight forwarding terms rather than Incoterms which are recognized internationally.

The below listings is not complete but a guide to main terms used. for more details we suggest you talk to the chamber of commerce locally or ask your supplier to do so. It is important in all dealings that these terms are agreed to between the buyer & seller of goods.

1) Departure
EXW == Ex Works (named place)

2) Main Carriage Unpaid
FCA – Free Carrier (named place)
FAS - Free alongside ship (named port of shipment)
FOB - Free on board (named port of shipment)

3) Main carriage paid
CFR – Cost & Freight (to named port of destination) (can be Known as C&F)
CIF - Cost Insurance and freight to (named port of destination)
CPT- Carriage paid to (named place of destination)
CIP - Carriage and Insurance paid to (named place of destination)

4) Arrival
DAF- Delivered at frontier (named place)
DES – Delivered ex Ship (named port of destination)
DEQ- Delivered ex Quay (named port of destination)
